[ Podcast ] Creating a Career That Never Feels Like ‘Work’ with Jim Logan
Join Chip Munn, CEO of Signature Wealth Group and Senior Wealth Advisor with RJFS as he interviews James ‘Jim’ Logan, a long-time friend, and man that truly embodies how to identify, chase and live your unique ‘Retirement Remix.’ Jim has had a full, varied, and adventurous career path leading him to combine his professional skills with his personal passions, creating a career that genuinely never felt like ‘work.’
Growing up a child living on the coast in Massachusettes, Jim developed a keen interest and fascination with the ocean, boats, and sailing. Jim began owning boats in his early teens, starting with an aluminum runabout and then moving onto a wood coastal cruiser. After college, Jim started his professional career with Miller Brewing Company. After six years in that position, Jim had gained valuable experience in management and the tools to work effectively in a high-pressure environment. After leaving there, Jim went into a completely unrelated field – ready for a change of pace and new challenges. Jim started his own company doing cabinetry and residential remodeling while living in central New York, near Syracuse. Eventually, the day came that Jim and his wife decided maybe they were ready to escape the cold, and she had an opportunity with her company to move to North Carolina. After owning and running his own company eight years, the move to NC gave Jim a chance to reassess which direction he wanted to go in next.
Deciding ultimately to get back into manufacturing, Jim decided he wanted to combine his boyhood passion with his professional experience and get into the boat manufacturing sector. He reached out to boat building companies in the Carolinas by sending resumes and cover letters looking for where he may be the perfect fit. This strategy landed him a position with one of the world’s largest boat manufactures, French company Beneteau Boats, who has had a plant in South Carolina since the late 1980s.
After ten years, and growing into two different management positions with them, he was feeling restless and began exploring other opportunities. After passing up a few positions that didn’t feel like the ‘right fit,’ Jim received one final call from a headhunter that had identified Jim as a great candidate for an opportunity in Australia. He and his wife were flown there by the company to interview and explore the area to consider potential relocation. After a great meeting and some soul searching, the couple decided to take the plunge ‘down under.’ Five years there and then returned to America and continued in the boat-building industry, before deciding he was ready to embrace retirement full-time.
