How do you empower your clients to live their Signature Life?

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, I empower and motivate our clients, and their families, by identifying and capitalizing on their strengths and creating complementary goals on an ongoing basis. For example, when clients leave the workforce, and perhaps 6 out of 10 of our relationships are retired, attainable goals become challenges to overcome similar to what they experienced in the workforce. We use Goal Planning & Monitoring software to not only show our “how to do it” but also give them the confidence to know they “can do it”. The Signature Life is one that is well planned and allows for flexibility and the power to choose between several options.

What does your life look like outside of the office?

My wife, Kristin, and our son, Turner, are the priority when I’m out of the office. We like to be outside whether it’s at the pool, the beach, a soccer game, walking, running or riding bikes. During the week, I also find time to participate in the Leland Area Rotary Club and it’s many civic activities. Our club, of which I was President in 2016-2017, pack backpacks full of food for children who don’t have enough at home on the weekends. We pick up trash on the roadside and raise money for high school scholarships and Alzheimer’s Research. I am active in the North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce and am a member of the Executive Committee on the Novant Brunswick Hospital Board of Trustees. If there’s any time left, I might find some time to play poker, scuba dive, or simply sit in a chair (yeah, right).

What can you tell us about your professional journey?

I got my start in the business by filing paperwork for my father, who was also a CFP® professional with Raymond James. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1999, I worked with my father before applying and being hired as a Research Liaison in the Raymond James home office in January 2001. I worked my way up to Senior Research Associate before deciding to move with my wife back to North Carolina and open up a Raymond James’ office in Leland in 2007. I earned the CFP® designation in 2012 and joined Signature Wealth in 2018. I am also an Eagle Scout, and the scout motto “Be Prepared” has become my daily mantra.

Jon participated in a 3 week Outward Bound course that took him to Nepal’s Langtang Valley where he hiked up a glacier and onto Yala Peak (5500 meter elevation or ~18,000 ft).

How do you empower your clients to live their Signature Life?

As a wealth advisor, my main role is to develop financial plans that identify client’s short, intermediate, and long-term goals and then create an investment policy that targets those needs. I use a long term conservative approach that is tailored to each individual based on the stage and phase of life he/she is in. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional I act with a fiduciary standard, putting my client’s interest first. Other job duties include market analysis, security selection process, serving my clients and community.

What does your life look like outside of the office?

Outside of work, I am involved in groups such as the Wilmington West Rotary, Leadership Wilmington class of 2019, Wilmington Chamber ambassador, North Brunswick chamber, UNCW Alumni Association, Port City Young Professionals, Cameron Executive Network at UNCW, CrossFit Wilmington. I have played sports all my life, but mostly enjoy playing basketball. I like spending free time with friends and relaxing at Wrightsville Beach.

What can you tell us about your professional journey?

I started college, like many, not knowing what I wanted to study or pursue a career in. After taking introduction business classes, I soon found a passion for finance and started an internship at Raymond James. A couple years in, I fell in love with the process of building relationships and helping clients reach their financial goals, transitioning to a full-time Wealth Advisor.

I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a dual bachelor’s degree in Finance and Management of Information Systems. In college I earned my Series 7, Series 66, and insurance licenses. Since then I have earned my Accredited Asset Management Specialist, AAMS® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, CFP® designation.
