Community Center Reno with Avery County Habitat for Humanity

Recovery takes time, especially after a hurricane like Helene. Avery County Habitat for Humanity is still in the process of returning to normal operations and rebuilding what was lost.

At the heart of one of the Habitat neighborhoods is a community center that serves many purposes, housing volunteers, welcoming community members, and providing an important gathering space. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, this center became a critical hub of safety and support. It offered hot showers, warm meals, a place to rest, and a sense of stability for community members working to regain their footing amid the chaos.

During the height of recovery efforts, all ongoing projects were paused so the sole focus could be on saving and salvaging as much as possible. Now, as hurricane relief efforts have slowed, the focus is shifting back to building homes and restoring the community center so it can continue serving those who need it most.

John, Ellie, and Lindsay had the opportunity to support Avery County Habitat for Humanity by helping renovate the community center by ripping up old flooring and laying down new floors. They spent the day learning about the organization’s impact on the local community and how volunteers from across the country come together to make a difference.

If you don’t volunteer regularly or haven’t yet taken a look at Avery County Habitat for Humanity, we highly recommend giving them a day or even a week of your time. We promise you won’t regret it.
